Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2 update brings AirPods-style features

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are finally starting to feel “Pro.” Google’s latest firmware update brings adaptive sound, noise protection, and even gesture-based controls to its flagship earbuds.

Google has begun rolling out a major update for the Pixel Buds Pro 2, more than a month after teasing the features at its Made by Google event. The new tools are designed to improve both audio quality and day-to-day usability, putting the earbuds closer to rivals like Apple’s AirPods Pro.

The biggest addition is Adaptive Audio, now found under Active Noise Control in the Pixel Buds app. This mode automatically tweaks volume depending on your surroundings, letting you enjoy music or podcasts while staying aware of the environment. Complementing it is Loud Noise Protection, which detects sudden harsh sounds—such as ambulance sirens or construction drills—and lowers their impact.

For users leaning on Gemini Live, the earbuds’ microphones now employ advanced processing to prioritise voice while filtering background noise. That should make speaking to Google’s AI smoother in crowded or noisy areas.

Google is also introducing gesture controls for a true hands-free experience: nodding your head can answer a call or begin dictation, while shaking it declines a call or dismisses a message.

The update, labelled 4.467, is rolling out gradually. Installation takes roughly 20 minutes in total—10 to download, 10 to apply.

While Apple still edges ahead on polish, Google’s latest push makes the Pixel Buds Pro 2 more compelling, especially at a lower price point. The upgrades close some of the feature gap and give owners a taste of premium convenience without the premium tag.
