Google has introduced Personal Intelligence for the Gemini app, outlining a new approach to how its AI assistant works across apps and user data. Announced on January 14, 2026, the feature is designed to make Gemini more context-aware by allowing it to securely connect with select Google services and deliver responses shaped by individual usage patterns.
Personal Intelligence is launching as a beta in the US and is positioned as an opt-in capability, giving users direct control over how their information is accessed and used.
What is Gemini Personal Intelligence
Personal Intelligence is Google’s way of making Gemini more personal and practical without turning it into a standalone tool. Instead of relying only on general web knowledge, Gemini can now reference information from user-approved Google apps to answer questions or assist with tasks.
According to Google, the feature focuses on two core abilities: reasoning across complex sources and retrieving specific details from personal content. This allows Gemini to combine information from text, images, and video to provide responses that are more relevant to an individual user’s needs.
Apps connected
Once enabled, Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to connect with apps such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Search. These connections can be turned on or off individually.
With access to Gmail, Gemini can pull details from emails when users ask about bookings, purchases, or documents. Google Photos enables Gemini to retrieve information from images, such as text or identifiers captured in photos. YouTube and Search help the assistant understand user interests and preferences based on viewing and search history, allowing it to provide more tailored suggestions.
What it brings for users
For users, Personal Intelligence is intended to reduce the need to manually search across multiple apps. Instead of switching between Gmail, Photos, and Search, users can ask a single question in Gemini and receive a response that brings together relevant details from connected services.
This improves everyday tasks such as planning travel, managing purchases, or retrieving specific information quickly. Gemini can also handle follow-up questions more effectively because it has access to prior context, making conversations feel more continuous.
Google has placed emphasis on privacy and control. Personal Intelligence is off by default, users choose which apps to connect, and they can use temporary chats or non-personalised responses at any time. Google says Gemini does not train directly on personal Gmail or Photos content, and that connected data is referenced only to generate responses.
Overall, Personal Intelligence positions Gemini as a central layer in Google’s AI ecosystem, focused on making assistance more relevant while keeping user data under explicit control.
