Google Pixel 10a vs Pixel 9a: How the two phones compare and which one should you buy

With the launch of Pixel 10a, Google is sticking to its winning A-series formula rather than rewriting it. The new model looks familiar, costs the same, but adds a handful of upgrades that could matter more than they first appear.

  • Pixel 10a offers a brighter, tougher display than the 9a.
  • New features: Satellite SOS, better wireless charging.
  • Camera software upgrades add Macro Focus and Camera Coach.

Now that pre-orders have opened for the Google Pixel 10a, comparisons with the Google Pixel 9a were inevitable. On the surface, the two phones are nearly identical. That is not laziness. It is consistency.

Google has retained the compact design, clean Android experience and camera-first positioning that made the 9a such a strong mid-range option. Both devices feature a 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display, the Tensor G4 chip, 8GB RAM, similar storage options and seven years of OS and security updates. In the US, pricing remains unchanged at $499. In India, that typically translates to a starting price in the Rs 45,000–Rs 50,000 range, depending on taxes and launch offers.

The upgrades this year are incremental. But they are not meaningless.

Design and display: Familiar, but tougher and brighter

Visually, the Pixel 10a does not stray far from the 9a. The understated design language remains intact.

Under the glass, however, there are subtle improvements. The Pixel 10a upgrades from Gorilla Glass 3 to Gorilla Glass 7i, which should offer better durability against scratches and accidental drops.

Brightness also sees a measurable boost. The Pixel 9a peaked at 1,800 nits for HDR and 2,700 nits overall, while the 10a pushes those figures to 2,000 nits HDR and 3,000 nits peak brightness. Outdoors, that could make a noticeable difference.

Contrast has improved too, rated at over 2,000,000:1, effectively doubling the previous model’s figure. In real-world use, that translates to deeper blacks and slightly richer visuals, especially during HDR playback.

Performance remains identical on paper. Both phones run the Tensor G4 chip, and while the Pixel 10a ships with Android 16, the 9a can be updated to the same version. Day-to-day speed should feel largely the same.

Cameras: Same hardware, smarter software

Camera hardware remains unchanged: a 48MP main sensor paired with a 13MP ultra-wide. There is still no dedicated telephoto lens.

Where the Pixel 10a pulls ahead is in software. It gains Camera Coach, which offers real-time framing tips, along with Macro Focus for closer, more reliable close-up shots.

Auto Best Take also makes its way to the 10a, intelligently merging multiple shots to fix blinking or awkward expressions in group photos. It is one of Google’s more practical AI tools and adds genuine value.

For users upgrading from much older Pixels, these software refinements will matter more than the unchanged megapixel count.

Battery and charging: Small but useful gains

Both devices pack a 5,100mAh battery and support 23W wired charging.

Wireless charging improves slightly. The Pixel 9a maxes out at 7.5W, while the Pixel 10a supports up to 10W using Qi Extended Power Profile chargers. It is not transformative, but it is quicker.

Extreme Battery Saver also stretches further. The 9a is rated for up to 100 hours in that mode, while the 10a claims up to 120 hours.

Satellite SOS: The real differentiator

The most meaningful addition is Satellite SOS. Thanks to a newer modem, the Pixel 10a can connect to satellite networks to contact emergency services when outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

The Pixel 9a lacks the hardware to support this feature. For hikers, travellers or anyone frequently in remote areas, this alone could justify choosing the newer device.

Should you upgrade?

If you already own a Pixel 9a, there is little urgency to move to the 10a. Performance and camera output will feel broadly similar.

But for first-time buyers or those upgrading from an older Pixel, the Pixel 10a is the more future-proof option at the same starting price. The brighter, tougher display and Satellite SOS capability give it a practical edge without inflating costs.

It may not be a radical leap. But for Rs 49,900, the Pixel 10a looks like the smarter buy on paper.
