Google is rolling out a redesigned photo viewer that promises a cleaner, more intuitive experience, packed with small but useful upgrades. The updated interface debuts first on iOS, with Android users set to follow shortly after.
One of the most noticeable changes is the introduction of a dedicated light mode that automatically syncs with your device’s system theme. Whether you’re a fan of bright interfaces or prefer darker tones, Google Photos will now match your aesthetic without extra toggles.
The redesign also brings key details — like date, time, and location — front and centre. These appear right above each photo, making it easier to remember where and when a moment was captured.
Navigation has been simplified too. The actions menu has been consolidated into a cleaner three-dot menu, housing familiar options like “Download,” “Delete from device,” “Google Lens,” “Create,” and “Cast.” Features like “Save as” for Live or Motion photos, and options to manage photo stacks or bursts, are now easier to find under this streamlined layout.
Stacked photos get their own quick-access menu via a three-dot icon on the thumbnail. This lets users manage stacks by changing the top pick, unstacking, removing, or bulk-selecting images for actions.
New tappable badges also enhance usability. These let you:
•Change a photo’s category
•Play or pause Live or Motion photos
•Back up shared photos or manage storage
•Save shared images directly to your library
Importantly, all existing functionality remains intact — including the “Add to” (+) button for album organization, archiving, or securing content in your Locked Folder.
With the update rolling out to iOS first, Android users can expect the revamped experience in the coming weeks.
