Google Maps now has competition as Alibaba’s Amap expands to 170 countries with smarter AI maps

Alibaba’s Amap is going global to challenge Google Maps, expanding to over 170 countries with smarter AI-powered navigation and support for 19 languages. The move aims to help Chinese carmakers build advanced in-car navigation systems for international markets.

Google Maps may finally have a real challenger. Alibaba’s mapping service, Amap, is going global with the launch of its international AutoSDK — a software toolkit designed to help carmakers build smarter in-car navigation systems. The move marks a major step for Amap as it takes on Google Maps’ dominance in global navigation.

Amap, which operates under Alibaba Group, said the new version of its AutoSDK will support carmakers in developing navigation and cockpit systems for overseas markets. The international rollout covers more than 170 countries across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America, and supports 19 major languages.

The company said it developed this global version to help Chinese automakers better adapt to international markets. Many Chinese car brands have struggled to customise their navigation systems for foreign users. With Amap’s new toolkit, they can now build localised, feature-rich maps faster and more efficiently.

The expansion also comes at a time when Chinese car exports are booming. In 2024, China shipped nearly 5 million passenger cars, and that number could double by 2030. Amap hopes to ride this wave by becoming the go-to navigation partner for these automakers abroad.

To ensure accuracy and compliance, Amap has partnered with Netherlands-based location data company Here Technologies. It also plans to establish independent entities and data centres in international markets to strengthen its local presence.

Amap’s new AutoSDK is described as modular and “Lego-style,” allowing developers to easily customise maps for different markets. The company is also using China’s Beidou satellite system for its mapping services, which helps improve precision in global navigation.

This global push follows several recent updates from Amap, including a ride-hailing service for foreign visitors in over 360 Chinese cities and expanded access to 26 countries across Asia and Europe.

With Amap’s latest move, Google Maps may have found its first real competitor from China. And for users, that could mean smarter navigation, better local features, and more choices on the road.
