Google has announced some big upgrades to its Gemini app, incorporating new features and making some existing ones free. The updates include improvements to Deep Research, connected apps, and the introduction of customisable Gems.
One of the big updates is the upgrade of Deep Research with Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental. According to a blog post by Google, this upgrade strengthens Gemini's capabilities across all research stages, from planning and searching to reasoning, analysing, and reporting. “Gemini now shows its thoughts while it browses the web, giving you a real-time look into how it’s going about solving your research task. By pairing Deep Research with this new model, we expect the quality of reports to keep getting even better,” said Google in a blog post.
Deep Research is now available globally in over 45 languages. Gemini users can try Deep Research a few times a month at no cost.
The Gemini app now offers an experimental personalization capability powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental. By connecting with Google apps and services, starting with Search, Gemini can deliver responses tailored to individual needs, says Google. For instance, it can provide restaurant recommendations based on recent food-related searches or offer travel advice based on previously searched destinations. Users remain in control of their Search history and can disconnect it from Gemini at any time.
Google also said that connected apps are becoming more powerful with the inclusion of Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos on the 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model. This enhancement allows Gemini to handle complex requests involving multiple apps. For example, users can ask Gemini to find a cookie recipe on YouTube, add the ingredients to a shopping list, and locate nearby grocery stores that are open. In the coming weeks, Google Photos will be added, enabling Gemini to create travel itineraries from photos or recall information like driver's license expiration dates.
Gems, which allow users to customise Gemini for specific tasks, are now available to everyone at no cost. Users can create custom Gems, such as a translator, meal planner, or math coach, by providing instructions and a name. Files can also be uploaded to provide additional context.
