In a significant shift for its desktop lineup, Apple has confirmed that it will start manufacturing the Mac mini in the United States later this year.
The announcement came from Sabih Khan, Apple’s chief operating officer, during a video interview with The Wall Street Journal. Speaking from a Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas, Khan said, “We’re very excited to tell you that later this year we will be beginning Mac mini manufacturing right here in this space.”
When asked about production volumes, Khan noted that Apple produces “thousands every week.” He added that over time, the company aims to scale Mac mini production in the US to serve customers in the region, suggesting a gradual expansion rather than an immediate full relocation of global output.
Currently, the Mac mini is manufactured in Vietnam and China. Bringing assembly to Texas represents another step in Apple’s broader diversification of its supply chain, which in recent years has sought to reduce reliance on China while responding to geopolitical and tariff pressures.
Apple has previously assembled certain Macs domestically. The higher-end Mac Pro has been positioned as the company’s American-made desktop since 2013, with production continuing in 2019. The Mac mini, however, is a far more mainstream product, making this shift potentially more symbolic and commercially relevant.
The Wall Street Journal’s coverage also included rare footage from GlobalWafers and TSMC facilities in Arizona, underscoring Apple’s alignment with expanding US semiconductor manufacturing.
The timing is difficult to ignore. The announcement arrives just days before the 2026 State of the Union address by Donald Trump, at a moment when American manufacturing and tariff policy remain central political themes. Apple continues to navigate higher costs tied to tariffs on imported goods, and increasing US production may help cushion some of that impact.
