Grok has recently come under scrutiny for allegedly generating explicit images of women and minors. The controversy prompted xAI to impose restrictions on image generation, limiting the feature to paid users. Elon Musk, in a recent post on X, denied the allegations, stating that Grok does not generate naked or illegal images, including content involving minors. He said he is not aware of any such instances and emphasised that the system is designed to refuse requests that violate the law.
Musk’s response to allegations
In a detailed post, Musk stated that Grok does not “spontaneously generate images” and only produces content based on user prompts. He added that when users ask the AI to create images, Grok is programmed to refuse anything illegal under the laws of the country or state in question. According to Musk, there are “literally zero” known instances of Grok generating naked underage images.
Musk acknowledged that, like other AI systems, Grok could face adversarial attempts where users try to manipulate prompts to bypass safeguards. However, he said that if such issues are discovered, they are treated as bugs and fixed immediately.
I not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero.Obviously, Grok does not spontaneously generate images, it does so only according to user requests. How Grok handles image generation
Grok is integrated into X and positioned as a conversational AI that can generate text and images. Musk emphasised that image generation is not automatic and requires explicit user input. He said the operating principle behind Grok is compliance with local laws, making it fundamentally different from systems that may lack strong content moderation controls.
The comments come amid wider scrutiny of generative AI tools and their ability to create harmful or inappropriate content. Several AI platforms have faced criticism in the past for weak guardrails, prompting companies to strengthen safety measures and transparency.
The controversy
The latest discussion emerged after users on X raised concerns about AI-generated explicit content and questioned how often such material appears on social platforms. Musk pushed back on claims that Grok is a source of illegal images, suggesting that user behaviour and algorithmic exposure on social networks are often conflated with the capabilities of the AI itself.
