Amazon Prime membership is getting expensive to experience ad-free viewing on Prime Video. The e-commerce platform has recently started sending out email to existing Prime users about the update that mentions “Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements”. The change will come into effect starting June 17, 2025.
Not only this, the message also highlights that there’s no action required from the users’ end – unless they want to pay more to get an ad-free experience on Prime Video.
No ad-free viewing unless you pay moreThe major highlight here is that Amazon has introduced ads into all the content that’s available on Prime Video, leaving users with ads while watching the content on Prime Video.
However, there’s another angle to this – an ‘ad-free tax’ that Amazon wants you to pay over the subscription plan to watch content without any ads on Prime Video. The add-on costs Rs 699 for a year or Rs 129 per month.
How much more you have to paySo, if you are an annual Prime user – new or old – you will have to pay Rs 1,499 for the entire membership and then Rs 699 over it to get an ad-free experience. So, the entire membership will cost Rs 2,198 annually or Rs 498 monthly.
How many ads?“Meaningfully Fewer” is what Amazon says. However, it hasn’t clarified how many ads will appear while watching the content. This is what Amazon said in the email: “ We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than TV channels and other streaming services.”
Other benefits remain unchangedAmazon has also made it clear that there will be no other changes to other benefits like same-day delivery, cash backs, etc, for the Prime members.
