Apple’s upcoming smart glasses could be one of its most ambitious products yet, with reports suggesting that the second-generation version will include an in-lens display capable of switching between two distinct modes depending on the device they are connected to. The concept signals Apple’s intent to blend mixed reality and everyday computing into a single, seamless experience.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who shared details in his Power On newsletter, Apple is exploring a system where the smart glasses will run a full version of visionOS when paired with a Mac, effectively turning them into a lightweight augmented reality workstation. When connected to an iPhone, however, the glasses will reportedly shift to a simplified, mobile-friendly interface that allows users to access notifications, messages, media, and essential apps in a more minimal setup.

This dual-mode functionality would make the device far more versatile than current offerings in the market. By giving users the ability to transition between a desktop-grade and mobile-grade experience, Apple could create a product that appeals to both professionals and casual users. It also fits into the company’s long-term strategy of creating a tightly integrated ecosystem, where hardware and software work together across multiple devices.

The smart glasses are expected to rival the Meta Ray-Ban range, which already includes an in-lens display and starts at $799 in the United States. While Apple’s first-generation glasses are unlikely to include a similar display, Gurman claims that they will focus on practical functions such as built-in speakers for audio playback, cameras for taking photos and videos, and voice controls through Siri. There may also be health-related features, continuing Apple’s growing push into wellness technology.

Previous reports have suggested that Apple could announce its first smart glasses as early as 2026, with an official release targeted for 2027. The delay is reportedly due to technical challenges around display miniaturisation, battery life optimisation, and heat management. These are common hurdles in wearable technology, but Apple’s engineering focus suggests that the company is determined to refine the concept before entering the market.

If the rumours hold true, the second-generation model could become the true flagship of Apple’s augmented reality strategy. The ability to run visionOS independently or alongside macOS would mark a major shift in how people interact with digital information. Combined with Apple’s track record in design and ecosystem consistency, the smart glasses could establish a new benchmark for wearable devices.
