India is a "hugely important' market for Meta's wearable and artificial intelligence (AI) device strategy, Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth told Moneycontrol at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21.

"We are very eager to bring the wearables to India. The demand has been huge," Bosworth said.

India is Meta's largest user market with a combined user base of over a billion monthly users, but also presents complex challenges, Bosworth noted.

"You've got 40-plus languages that are being spoken across a huge range. The distribution inside India is uneven in terms of your ability to bring products to market consistently," he said.

Bosworth however noted that he can't give a timeline yet. "There's a bunch of reasons for that. Some of them are on our side, like manufacturing and deployment. Some of them are on the India side. But it's something we're working on actively," he said.

Meta's AI glasses push

Over the past couple of years, Meta has doubled down on smart glasses, which have emerged as a surprise hit for the social media giant. The Ray-Ban Meta line of smart glasses has sold more than two million units since its 2023 launch.

The company launched its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in India in May 2025, marking its first hardware push in the country. These smart glasses are available on Flipkart, Amazon India, Ray-Ban.com and leading optical and sunglass stores across the country.

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses were initially introduced in September 2023, following the earlier launch of Ray-Ban Stories in 2021. Meta is working with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica to develop these smart glasses.

In September 2025, Meta unveiled Ray-Ban Display glasses, the company’s first smart glasses with a high-resolution display and a neural band to interact with them.

Meta prototyping various form factors

These smart glasses are a crucial part of Meta’s AI ambitions, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating that AI glasses would be “the main way that we integrate superintelligence into our day-to-day lives.”

However, AI glasses won't be the only form factor available and the company is "prototyping every kind of crazy idea you can imagine," Bosworth said.

"There's a ton of people playing with every form factor. You've got pendants, pens, pins, and wrists. You can safely assume we're playing with all of it. Internally, we've got a really great team," he noted.

Bosworth said that we are going to benefit in the future when AI has greater context on its own. The more visual information it has about the world, the better we will be able to use that AI.

"If you just look at the human cortex of the brain, visual processing is by far the biggest sensory processing area. The reason for that is it's an incredibly efficient way for us to gain information. Hence, the visual cortex for us is going to be hugely valuable," he explained.

Audio the next big opportunity for AI devices

Audio is the next big opportunity, helping consumers hear things and get information to them in an audible manner.

"Audio-visual just feels like, for human beings or as a species, the two ways that we are going to relate the most to the AI and it's going to be able to understand the best of what we're trying to accomplish," Bosworth said.

He believes that AI devices will eventually give consumers superhuman hearing, vision, cognition, and memory, so much so that if they take them off, they will feel at a disadvantage, just as somebody who needs prescription glasses is at a disadvantage to other people who don't need them.
