Meta acquires AI agent social network Moltbook, founders join superintelligence unit

Meta Platforms has acquired Moltbook, a social network built specifically for AI agents, according to a report by Axios. The deal brings Moltbook’s creators — Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr — into Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s AI research division led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI.

Moltbook gained attention for experimenting with a new concept: a social network where AI agents interact with each other, rather than just human users. The platform allowed autonomous AI tools to share updates, collaborate and interact in a feed-style environment similar to traditional social media.

The acquisition signals Meta’s growing interest in the emerging AI agent ecosystem, where software agents can perform tasks, communicate and potentially collaborate across platforms.

For observers tracking the rapidly evolving space, the deal adds another piece to a broader industry puzzle. Moltbook now sits within Meta’s ecosystem, while competing projects are emerging elsewhere.

One example is OpenClaw, formerly known as Clawdbot, which is linked to OpenAI. Meanwhile, Apple hardware — particularly the Apple Mac mini (M4) — has become a popular device for developers experimenting with local AI agents.

Meta’s interest in AI-powered social interaction may also reflect its existing strengths. The company already operates some of the world’s largest social platforms, including Facebook.

In fact, some users jokingly note that Facebook already feels like a social network for AI-generated content, given the growing presence of automated posts and AI-generated media on the platform.

By bringing Moltbook and its founders into Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company appears to be positioning itself to play a bigger role in how AI agents communicate and collaborate online.
