Apple is preparing a major overhaul of Siri by integrating Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models, according to a Bloomberg report. The move represents a shift in Apple’s AI strategy after internal delays and performance gaps slowed the rollout of Apple Intelligence features. The report claims Apple is working on two separate versions of Siri, launching in phases across upcoming software updates.

The first version is expected to arrive with iOS 26.4, while a more comprehensive redesign is planned for iOS 27 later this year. Both versions are said to rely on Google’s Gemini technology, though Apple will present the system internally as part of its own foundation models framework.

Two versions of Siri explained

The report states that the near-term Siri upgrade in iOS 26.4 will focus on improving reliability and task execution. This version is designed to handle personal data, on-screen content, and contextual requests more effectively than the current assistant. Internally, Apple is said to label this system as Apple Foundation

Models version 10, even though it is powered by Gemini.

The second version, expected to debut with iOS 27, is described as a complete rebuild. Codenamed separately, this Siri will function more like a conversational chatbot, enabling sustained dialogue and context-aware interactions. It is expected to compete directly with services such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, using a more advanced model internally referred to as version 11.

Why Apple turned to Google Gemini

Apple reportedly explored partnerships with multiple AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, before finalising its deal with Google. Cost concerns, talent competition, and long-term strategic conflicts influenced those discussions. Google’s Gemini models improved rapidly over the past year, and the existing Apple–Google relationship made the partnership more viable.

Initially, Gemini-powered Siri requests will run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. Over time, Apple may allow more advanced queries to be processed directly on Google’s cloud infrastructure to improve speed and accuracy.

What this means for users

For users, the shift is expected to result in a more capable Siri that can handle complex requests across apps rather than acting as a basic voice assistant. Apple plans to integrate the new Siri more deeply into core apps instead of launching standalone chatbot experiences.

The first public preview of the updated Siri is expected in early 2026, with the full conversational version likely to be showcased at Apple’s WWDC event alongside iOS 27.
