Apple iPhone 16 Pro sees lower demand than expected, iPhone 16 Plus pre-orders go up by 48%

The pre-orders for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are down by 16% and 27%, respectively, compared to last year’s pre-order figures. However, the base and the iPhone 16 Plus have seen a surge in demand.

Apple launched its much-awaited iPhone 16 series last week at its ‘Glowtime’ event in California, which included four models: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. All four smartphones also went up for pre-orders soon after the event concluded and were expected to garner record sales, as these are the first iPhones to boot with Apple Intelligence features out of the box.

However, according to a new pre-order analysis by Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple is facing less demand for its iPhone 16 Pro models. The report in Medium by Kuo suggests that the first pre-week preorder figure of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 16% lower compared to last year. The iPhone 16 Pro demand is even lower than the Pro Max, with a 27% drop.

Interestingly, the demand for the standard iPhone 16 and the Plus models has significantly increased. The base iPhone 16 sees a growth of 10%, while the iPhone 16 Plus is the most demanded iPhone 16 model right now, as it sees an impressive 48% growth from last year. Kuo has also confirmed that the iPhone 16 series has been shipped to approximately 37 million customers, which is a 12.7% decline from 2023.

He further mentioned that higher yields on the tetraprism camera (5x telephoto) are a key factor in Apple shipping more units of the iPhone 16 Pro Max than they did last year on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, he also believes that Apple could implement more aggressive iPhone product strategies in 2025 to stimulate market demand and see a growth in pre-order figures.
