Apple is bringing a new charging-related feature to the Apple Watch with the release of watchOS 26. Much like the “Slow Charger” warning that arrived for iPhone users with iOS 18, Apple Watch will now alert users if charging performance can be improved.
The update was highlighted in a new Apple support page spotted by MacRumors, which details how the feature works and how users can optimise charging speeds.
According to Apple, if your Apple Watch detects that charging could be faster, a “Slow Charger” message will appear in Settings under the Battery section. The company stresses that this does not indicate a fault with either the Apple Watch or the charger in use. Instead, it is a notification that the watch could charge more quickly if a higher-wattage charger or improved setup is used.
Apple has outlined the official steps to speed up charging. First, users should opt for a higher-power USB-C charger and a compatible charging cable. Second, Apple recommends connecting directly to a wall outlet rather than using a hub, computer or in-car charging port. The reasoning is that power output is often reduced when chargers are shared across multiple devices.
The company also warns against charging in extreme environments. Very hot or very cold conditions may reduce charging efficiency and potentially affect battery health over time. Keeping the watch in a stable environment while charging will deliver the best results.
Apple specifically points out that using USB hubs or multi-port chargers may limit the maximum available power. If several devices are plugged in at once, each may receive only a portion of the total output, leading to slower charging times for the Apple Watch. For the best performance, Apple suggests plugging the charging cable directly into a dedicated power adapter.
The Slow Charger warning adds a layer of transparency for Apple Watch owners who may not realise why charging feels slow in certain setups. Instead of leaving users to guess whether their charger or cable is the problem, watchOS 26 will now provide guidance on how to achieve faster and more efficient charging.
This feature is particularly useful for those who rely heavily on their Apple Watch throughout the day. Quick top-ups before heading out or during short breaks become easier if the right charging setup is in place. By offering direct advice, Apple is ensuring that users can maximise the hardware they already own without unnecessary trial and error.
