It was a proud moment for Indian chess once again as 19-year-old Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh stunned World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen at the Norway Chess Tournament. Gukesh, hailed as one of India’s brightest young talents, had etched his name in history by defeating Ding Liren in 2024 to become the World Chess Champion. Although his form dipped slightly after that monumental achievement and his start to the Norway Chess event was shaky, Gukesh has now roared back to form in spectacular fashion with a win against the best in the world.

The clash between Carlsen and Gukesh was a gripping battle. The young Indian held his nerve and secured a remarkable win, earning crucial points in the process. Carlsen, visibly agitated by the loss, was seen punching the table in frustration, while Gukesh stood calmly by, taking a moment to absorb the significance of having toppled the world's top-ranked player.

For the second consecutive year at Norway Chess, an Indian teenager has stunned Magnus Carlsen in the classical format. Last year, it was R Praggnanandhaa—this time, it’s the reigning world champion who’s joined that elite club. Carlsen appeared to have the upper hand for most of the game, but much like the fickle weather in Stavanger, the tide turned in an instant.

The legendary Susan Polgar highlighted the significance of Carlsen's defeat at the hands of Gukesh.

"Carlsen rarely loses in classical chess, and he rarely commits big blunders. He was playing so well with the black pieces in round 6 in Norway against Gukesh. He had a winning position with more time on the clock. But Gukesh did not give up. He continued to fight and Carlsen's advantage slowly disappeared. Then when both were in time pressure, he made a huge blunder which cost him the game. This has to be one of the most painful losses in his spectacular career. I am sure he is very angry with himself," she said.
