  • Western Monarch Day on February 5 raises awareness about butterfly decline.
  • Western monarch populations have dropped over 95 percent since the 1980s.
  • Conservation efforts like planting milkweed and habitat restoration are crucial.

Western Monarchs are the most common and widely known butterfly species. But do you know they have their own day? Every 5th February is celebrated as Western Monarch Day. But in 2026, this day highlights a silent environmental crisis. This famous butterfly is slowly disappearing. Scientists are raising urgent alarms. Conservation efforts are now more important than ever.

What Is Western Monarch Day?

Western Monarch Day is observed every year on 5th February.  It focuses on saving western monarch butterflies. The day spreads awareness about declining populations. It also promotes habitat protection and research. Environmental groups organise public campaigns.

Where Is This Day Celebrated?

Western Monarch Day is mainly observed in countries such as United States, Canada and Mexico. California hosts major events. Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz organise butterfly counts. IUCN Warning: Are They at Risk?

On the 29th Western Monarch Count that took place in December 2025, recorded about 12,260 monarch butterflies across 249 overwintering sites along California’s coast. This is named as third-lowest total since 1997.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has issued warnings. Western monarchs face multiple threats including habitat loss, decline of milkweed and change in climate.

How Serious Is the Decline?

The decline is alarming for wildlife as well as scientists. In the 1980s, millions of this species existed. But today, numbers have collapsed. Recent surveys shows that this butterfly is fewer than 2,000. Population drops exceed to 95 percent. The wildfires destroyed their habitats. Experts warn of extinction risk. Without action, recovery may fail.

Can Monarchs Be Saved?

Scientists believe that recovery of western monarch butterflies is still possible. But time is limited. Conservation efforts may include planting milkweed, restoration of breeding grounds and supports caterpillar growth.

Less of pesticides can improve survival rates. Western Monarch Day is more than a celebration. It is a warning signal. This iconic butterfly is vanishing and human activity can play a major role in conservation of this species.
