According to IUCN, Yangtze giant softshell turtle is critically endangered. Experts warn this species is extremely close to total extinction. Only two turtles of this species are left. Added to IUCN Red List 2018, its conservation remains very difficult.

Species at the Edge of Survival

Native to Vietnam and southern China, this turtle is enormous. It has a distinctive pig-like snout and an impressive shell. It can live for over a hundred years in captivity. Historically abundant, its numbers have collapsed due to human activity. This species is listed as “Critically Endangered” by IUCN experts.

How Bad the Situation Is?

Only two individuals remain in the wild, both in Vietnam. Captive populations are extremely limited, with many eggs failing to hatch. Previous breeding attempts have mostly been unsuccessful and highly fragile.

Scientists fear extinction if urgent conservation measures are not taken. Each turtle that's still around plays a vital role in keeping the species genetically diverse.

Major Threats to Survival

Pollution from factories, farms, and homes hurts them. They're losing their homes because of dams, fish farms, and changes to rivers. Weather changes are making things worse with dry spells, floods, and crazy temperatures.

People are also catching them and taking them illegally, which has really cut down on the number of grown-up turtles that can reproduce. These combined pressures make the species one of the rarest turtles worldwide.

Conservation Efforts Underway

Captive breeding programmes exist, including in China’s Suzhou Zoo facilities.DNA studies assist in finding wild individuals and protecting important habitats. Getting local communities involved is key to stopping poaching and habitat loss.

Global groups back conservation with money, studies, and awareness efforts. Experts push for quick steps to save this ancient giant turtle.
