Greenland sharks used to be believed to be close to being blind over the decades. They had eyes clouded with parasites who supported the myth about poor eyesight. These lowly pacing arctic whales sailed silently on icy waters. Up to this point, a good majority of their behaviour was puzzling to man.
A new study is altering everything about these ancient predators. Scientists have found out that Greenland sharks can have a wide visual range than believed. Even their unknown potentials are defying all scientific beliefs that scientists held about them.
What did Scientists Find in Greenland Sharks?
The retinas of the sharks are no longer dead, but they are capable of detecting light. Vision in the presence of parasite copepods on the eyes is preserved. Probably they are able to perceive motion and contours in dark Arctic light. This implies that they are not gropeers, but hunters. Their gradual drifting quells speed and seemingly accurate movement on water.
Who Is Studying These Sharks?
Nigel Hussey is a lead scientist in Greenland sharks. He closely looks at their behaviour, ecology and hunting patterns. He examined their eyes, their retina and their vision of light. The discoveries disprove ancient assumptions that sharks can hardly see. Scientists study the natural shark habitat, which is in ice in Greenland.

Are these Sharks the Oldest?
The greenland sharks are one of the longest living vertebrates on the planet. Debated lifespans of up to 500 years are some estimates of lifespan. Ageing is not easy because of slow growth, deep habitat in arctic and late maturity. They are very old and are still in existence to witness the centuries of Arctic transformation.
What Research was done by the Scientists?
Scientists examined eyes of the sharks under complex analysis of the retina. They measured the structure, the ability to sense light and visual affair indications. The presence of parasites on the cornea was analysed to know the vision.
Movement and behaviour observations showed that the eyes were cloudy yet there was visual acuity. Joint anatomical and behavioural research found out the hidden capabilities of the sharks.
Why This Discovery Matters?
It disproves decades of beliefs regarding the vision of sharks in Greenland. It is more able, vigilant, and energetic than should be thought. Their explanation enhances an insight into the ecology and behaviour of predators of the arctic.
It is those who remind scientists that should not underestimate those slow aging species. Even animals believed that something straightforward can be very complex, that can only be detected.
