Rockets to study Aurora lights? NASA plans to Launch sound rocket for CT scan of Northern Lights

The northern lights have fascinated humans for centuries. They paint the sky with green, purple, and red waves. But behind this beauty lies powerful space physics. Scientists now want to understand what truly drives these lights. NASA has announced a new rocket mission. Its goal is to scan the aurora like a medical CT machine.

NASA’s Mission Over Alaska’s Frozen Skies

NASA will launch a rocket to study Aurora lights. The mission will launch from Alaska’s Poker Flat Research Range. Two sounding rockets will fly directly into active auroras. They will travel hundreds of kilometres above Earth.

Their timing must match strong auroral activity. Launch windows are carefully selected. Weather and solar activity are being studied as they play crucial roles.

What Is This Special Rocket That Will Fly Inside The Aurora?

NASA will use sounding rockets for this mission. These are small research rockets, not space launch vehicles. They are designed for short scientific flights. Sounding rockets can reach the upper atmosphere within minutes.

They carry lightweight scientific instruments. They are ideal for studying fast changing phenomena. For this mission, the rockets carry plasma sensors. They also include radio transmitters and receivers. These tools measure electric fields and particle motion.

Auroras Are Electric Highways Between Earth And Space

Auroras form when charged particles hit Earth’s atmosphere. These particles come from the Sun. They travel along Earth’s magnetic field lines. When they collide with gases, light appears. But scientists have learned something more. Auroras behave like giant electrical circuits. They connect space with the upper atmosphere.

How Tiny Sensors Will Create A 3D Space Scan?

Each rocket will release 8 small sensors. These sensors will spread inside the aurora. They will send radio signals through plasma. This plasma is electrically charged gas in space. By analysing signal changes, scientists can map currents. This produces a three dimensional (3D) electrical picture. It works like a CT scan of the human body.

What Scientists will find inside Aurora Lights? 

The scientists want to track electron movement. They aim to measure current strength and direction. They will study energy transfer processes. Scientists also hope to understand why auroras change shape and arcs. They will also understand how other auroras appear as curtains or spirals. These patterns may reveal hidden electric flows.
