An endangered sperm whale, one of only a few ever recorded in Israel, has washed ashore at Zikim Beach, prompting scientists to investigate what may be threatening this fragile Mediterranean population.

A dead sperm whale has washed ashore in southern Israel, marking only the eighth recorded case of such a carcass appearing along the country’s coastline.

The whale was discovered at Zikim Beach on the Mediterranean coast. Authorities confirmed it is a sperm whale. This species is the largest toothed whale. Records show few strandings in Israel. Only seven similar cases were documented previously.

Experts are travelling to examine the body. They come from the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station. The station operates under the University of Haifa. Specialists from Delphis are also involved. A necropsy will determine the cause.

Mediterranean Sperm Whale Population at Risk

Scientists say regional numbers remain limited. Estimates range between 250 and 2,500 individuals. This Mediterranean group is considered endangered. Researchers describe it as genetically distinct.

Dr Aviad Scheinin heads the Apex Predator Department. He works at the Morris Kahn station. He said this population is isolated. It differs from Atlantic sperm whales. They even use a unique clicking pattern. This acoustic dialect identifies their community.

Dr Mia Elser from Delphis commented. She noted increased sightings since 2020. More live whales were seen offshore recently. She said strandings have risen accordingly. Scientists are studying whether patterns connect.

Threats Facing Sperm Whales

Experts outline several major dangers. Drift nets often entangle unintended species. Energy surveys produce intense underwater noise. Such activity may damage whale hearing. It can also disrupt feeding behaviour.

Plastic pollution presents another serious hazard. Sperm whales frequently ingest floating debris. Swallowed waste can block digestive systems. In some cases it proves fatal.

Researchers hope the necropsy clarifies circumstances. Findings may reveal injuries or toxins. They could also indicate plastic ingestion. Results will guide future conservation measures.

The Mediterranean population remains vulnerable today. Its small size heightens extinction risk. Conservationists stress urgent protective efforts. Monitoring sightings and strandings remains essential. The latest discovery highlights ongoing challenges. Scientists say continued research is critical.
