NASA has issued an urgent alert about a near-Earth asteroid named 2024 PS1, which is expected to make its closest approach on August 13. This asteroid is roughly the size of a house, measuring 59 feet wide.. It is expected to pass Earth at a distance of 847,000 miles.
Asteroid 2024 PS1 is part of the Apollo group, a cluster of asteroids that frequently cross Earth's orbit. It will zoom past at a speed of roughly 19,200 miles per hour (30,899 kilometres per hour). Though this distance may seem vast, it's relatively close in astronomical terms, which is why NASA is keeping a keen eye on it.
To put things into perspective, the asteroid will be three times farther away than the Moon is from Earth. Despite the seemingly large gap, this makes it a near-Earth object that requires careful monitoring. NASA’s tracking efforts ensure that we stay informed about potential space threats.
Monitoring Near-Earth Objects: NASA's Vigilant Approach
NASA, along with other space agencies, uses an advanced network of telescopes and computing technology to keep tabs on these near-Earth objects. Most NEOs stay well clear of Earth, but those that come within 7.5 million kilometres and are larger than 460 feet (140 metres) get special attention.
The Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA diligently monitors these asteroids, evaluating any potential risks they might pose. This careful observation helps us understand and prepare for any possible dangers from space.
