Mystifying Cloud: A glowing “Jellyfish” cloud appears over Florida after SpaceX Starlink launch

A strange glowing formation resembling a giant jellyfish floating in the sky stunned early-morning observers across Florida after a rocket launch by SpaceX. The unusual sight appeared shortly after a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off.

This rocket carried dozens of satellites for the Starlink internet network. The launch took place from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, one of the United States’ main space launch sites.

A Rocket Exhaust Cloud Lit by the Sun

Although the spectacle looked mysterious, scientists say the glowing structure was caused by a rocket exhaust plume expanding high in the atmosphere. As the Falcon 9 climbed into thinner air, its exhaust gases spread outward rapidly.

Because the launch occurred just before sunrise, sunlight was already illuminating the high-altitude gases even though the ground remained dark. This sunlight reflected off the expanding plume, producing a bright glowing cloud that appeared to float across the sky.

The “Space Jellyfish” Effect

The phenomenon is often called a “space jellyfish” because the expanding exhaust cloud can resemble a translucent jellyfish with long glowing tendrils trailing behind it.

These shapes form when the rocket’s exhaust gases rapidly expand in the near-vacuum conditions of the upper atmosphere. Without dense air to contain them, the gases spread outward into large cloud-like structures.

When sunlight hits the plume at the right angle, the entire formation can appear bright white, blue, or even pink, creating spectacularvisuals visible across hundreds of kilometres.

A Spectacle Frequently Seen After SpaceX Launches

Such events have become more common in recent years due to the increasing number of launches by SpaceX, especially missions deploying Starlink satellites. These satellites aim to provide global satellite internet coverage.

Each Falcon 9 launch typically carries dozens of small satellites into low-Earth orbit, and the rocket’s upper-stage. The burn often produces blue exhaust plume visible across large areas.

A Brief but Stunning Sky Show

Despite their striking appearance, these glowing clouds usually last only a few minutes. As the rocket continues its journey into orbit, the exhaust gases disperse and fade into the upper atmosphere. This moment is a rare mix of modern space technology and atmospheric optics creating a natural-looking cosmic display in the early morning sky.
