India’s space programme is entering a decisive phase in 2026, as the Indian Space Research Organisation places strong emphasis on preparations for its first human spaceflight. The year is expected to be led by the Gaganyaan programme, supported by several satellite launches, technology demonstration missions, and major infrastructure development, while some deep-space exploration plans are deferred.
ISRO’s central mission for 2026 is the uncrewed Gaganyaan G1 flight, scheduled for launch by March. The mission will carry the humanoid robot Vyommitra and test the full mission profile, including launch dynamics, orbital operations, onboard systems performance, and crew module recovery procedures. The G1 mission is intended to validate systems required for India’s first crewed spaceflight, planned for 2027.
The space agency has already completed successful abort tests under the TV-D1 mission, confirming the reliability of the Crew Escape System designed to protect astronauts during emergencies. Data from the G1 mission will be critical in certifying the spacecraft for human travel. ISRO officials have reiterated that crew safety remains the guiding principle for every stage of the programme.
In parallel with human spaceflight preparations, ISRO plans to conduct at least seven launches during 2026 using PSLV, LVM3, GSLV Mk II, and SSLV rockets. A key mission includes the launch of Oceansat-3A aboard an industry-built PSLV. The satellite will enhance weather forecasting, oceanographic research, and land monitoring, working alongside Oceansat-3 to deliver near-daily observation data.
The year will also feature several technology demonstration missions. These include experiments involving electric propulsion systems and quantum key distribution, highlighting India’s growing focus on advanced space technologies. Meanwhile, a new launch complex for SSLV missions is nearing completion, expanding capacity for small satellite launches.
| Launch Vehicle | Mission | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| LVM3 | Gaganyaan G1 | Human spaceflight testing |
| PSLV | Oceansat-3A | Weather and ocean monitoring |
| SSLV | Small satellite missions | Commercial and technology payloads |
| GSLV Mk II | Technology demonstrations | Advanced space systems |
ISRO has confirmed that Chandrayaan missions will not be launched in 2026, as organisational resources are being directed towards ensuring the success of the Gaganyaan program
