Snow may fall on Bengal, but gold could lie beneath. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has confirmed 9 potential sites. This discovery was shared by the Union Ministry of Mines. Experts emphasise that these are early-stage findings, not proven reserves.

Intensified exploration over the past 5 years has mapped valuable resources. GSI surveys also found rare earth elements and other critical minerals. Officials say these elements are key for clean tech and defence industries. Purulia’s Kalapathar–Raghudih block holds about 0.67 million tonnes of rare earth minerals.

Where Exactly Has Gold Been Spotted?

Most sites lie in the rugged Purulia–Bankura belt. The Jangal Mahal region shows particular promise for gold. Rudra prospect stands out with confirmed gold-bearing rocks. Sites are mostly at initial or preliminary exploration stages.

Geologists report these locations may hold additional undiscovered veins. Field surveys continue to map precise gold-rich zones across Bengal. The nine sites mentioned by the Ministry of Mines are in early stages of exploration (G3/G4).

How Much Gold Could Be There?

GSI estimates around 650 kilograms of gold across these sites. This is modest compared to India’s largest gold fields. However, prices make even small deposits commercially interesting.

Officials describe this as a “significant possibility” for mining. Experts warn quantities may increase after deeper exploratory drilling. Preliminary tests suggest the gold is scattered but potentially extractable.

Could There Be More Than Gold?

GSI surveys also detected rare earth elements and minerals. These are crucial for electronics, defence and green energy. The discoveries underline Bengal’s untapped geological potential. The scientists have been surveying several districts since 2019. Some elements found could support future technology and energy sectors. Research continues to evaluate the full economic and scientific value.

What do Scientists think About this Discovery?

Experts call the findings “promising but preliminary.” GSI geologists emphasise further drilling is urgently required. They caution commercial mining cannot proceed yet safely.

Scientists highlight environmental and geological studies must come first. Researchers are excited about Bengal’s previously untapped mineral potential.

Some see this as a chance to advance mining science.
