There’s something magical about new life, especially in zoos. At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, that magic arrived on Monday morning. A western lowland gorilla was born to 32-year-old Asha, sparking delight across the zoo. This marks the first gorilla birth at the zoo in over ten years.

The tiny primate, still without a name, is doing well. Zoo staff said the baby is feeding and holding tightly to Asha. Visitors and keepers alike have welcomed this uplifting moment with smiles. The birth is seen as a beacon of hope for the species.

Strong Bond Between Asha and Her Baby

Keepers report that Asha is caring for the baby closely. She sits and lies beside the newborn, gently patting its back. As she moves, the baby clings to her fur for safety. Staff said Asha has also been grooming and licking the baby.

This is Asha’s third baby, and she is doing well. Her gentle care shows her strong instincts and experience. The father, 34-year-old Goma, is a first-time dad. He joined the zoo from Germany in 2016.

Goma Shows Interest in New Baby

Goma has been keeping a close eye on his family. According to keepers, he watches them with calm interest. He's been seen grumbling softly near Asha and the baby. These sounds, they say, are signs of affection in gorillas.

Though he keeps his distance for now, Goma stays nearby. Asha shows him the baby but sets her space. The zoo hopes he’ll grow into his fatherly role with time.

Conservation Message Behind the Joy

The western lowland gorilla is listed as critically endangered. Loss of habitat, disease, and poaching all pose threats. One major issue is coltan mining in African forests. This mineral is used in phones and other electronics.

The zoo urges visitors to recycle old mobile devices. Recycling helps reduce mining and protect gorilla habitats. Special collection bins are placed around the zoo for this purpose.

Hope for the Species and Visitors Alike

This birth is part of a national breeding programme. Staff is giving Asha the lead in caring for the baby. As long as the baby feeds and moves normally, keepers will not interfere.

Guests may now spot the new family at Primate World. The public is invited to observe from a respectful distance. Seeing this moment firsthand reminds us why conservation matters.
