  • A rare "twinned" rainbow with five arcs appeared in Pensacola, Florida.
  • Twinned rainbows form when raindrops of different sizes fall.
  • Images of the vivid, layered rainbow went viral on social media.

Skywatchers in Pensacola were treated to a breathtaking spectacle when multiple “twinned” rainbows appeared across the horizon. This rainbow has five distinct arcs. Images captured of the extraordinary moment had gone viral on social media.

This image shows layers of vivid color stretching across the sky. What looked like a simple rainbow at first glance turned out to be a far rarer atmospheric display.

What Exactly Is a “Twinned” Rainbow?

A twinned rainbow, however, is different. Instead of one main arc and one outer reflection, twinned rainbows split from the same base forming two primary arcs side by side.

They share the same color order and appear almost like a fork in the rainbow. This phenomenon occurs when raindrops of different sizes fall at the same time.

Light bends (refracts) differently depending on droplet size. When two dominant droplet sizes are present in a rain shower, the result can be a split or duplicated primary rainbow.

How many arcs were there?

Observers reported seeing up to five arcs. This count likely included the primary rainbow, a secondary rainbow, twinned primary arcs and faint supernumerary bands (extra pastel-colored fringes inside the main arc).

This rainbow was visible under optimal conditions such as steady sunlight, uniform rainfall and clear viewing angles.

Does This Happen Rarely?

Yes, especially in this form. While single rainbows are common after rainfall, twinned rainbows are significantly rarer. Twinned rainbows split from the same base and appear side by side. Even a small change in droplet size distribution can prevent the split effect. Seeing multiple arcs layered together makes the event even more unusual.

A Lucky Morning, A Rare Alignment

Rainbows may feel ordinary. But this Florida display was anything but. It required precision in sunlight, moisture, droplet size and viewing angle which made it a delicate atmospheric equation. For a few fleeting minutes, the morning sky over Pensacola turned into a layered prism.
