Vijaya Ekadashi, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, falls on February 13, 2026. Observing this fast is believed to bring victory and remove obstacles. Parana, or breaking the fast, should be done on February 14 between 7:00 AM and 9:14 AM, following specific rituals.

In Hindu culture, Ekadashi is considered one of the holiest days dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. Among the many Ekadashis observed throughout the year, Vijaya Ekadashi holds a special place. As the name 'Vijaya' implies, this fast is observed to secure victory over enemies and success in difficult tasks.

This year, Vijaya Ekadashi falls on Friday, February 13, 2026. Devotees believe that observing this fast with a pure heart helps remove obstacles and brings prosperity.

Vijaya Ekadashi 2026: Dates and Timings

To observe the fast correctly, it is important to know the exact duration of the Ekadashi Tithi (lunar day). According to the Panchang, the timings are as follows:

Parana Timing: When to break the fast

Breaking the fast is known as Parana. It is a crucial part of the ritual and must be done at the right time on the next day (Dwadashi). If the fast is not broken within the Dwadashi period, it is considered an offence.

Simple rules for Parana

  • Morning is best: The most auspicious time to break the fast is in the morning (Pratahkal).
  • Avoid mid-day: One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna (afternoon). If you miss the morning slot, wait until the afternoon period is over.
  • Hari vasara: Never break the fast during Hari Vasara (the first quarter of the Dwadashi Tithi). You must wait for this period to finish before eating.

Who should fast?

In Hindu tradition, there are specific rules for different devotees. Smarthas (people with families) are advised to observe the fast on the first day. Sanyasis (ascetics), widows, and those seeking liberation (Moksha) often observe the fast on the second day, which coincides with the Vaishnava Ekadashi. However, for Vijaya Ekadashi 2026, the main observance is on February 13.

Why is Vijaya Ekadashi celebrated?

The significance of this day dates back to the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama observed the Vijaya Ekadashi vrat to ensure his victory before crossing the ocean to Lanka to rescue Goddess Sita. Since then, this day has been celebrated as a powerful occasion for overcoming life's challenges.
