Significance of Ghatasthapana

Ghatasthapana is also known as Kalash Sthapana, it is one of the most important rituals of Navratri. It symbolizes invoking the divine power of Maa Durga and beginning nine days of worship, fasting, and devotion. Scriptures clearly state that Ghatasthapana performed at the wrong time can invite negative energies, whereas doing it at the right muhurat brings prosperity, strength, and blessings.

The Kalash represents the universe and placing it during Navratri is a way of inviting Goddess Shakti into one’s home.

Rules and Prohibitions for Ghatasthapana

According to Vedic scriptures, Ghatasthapana must be done with great care, following proper guidelines:

  • It should not be performed during Amavasya or at night.
  • Afternoon and late hours (beyond 16 ghatis after sunrise) are prohibited.
  • The ritual is best performed in the morning during Pratipada Tithi.
  • If the main muhurat is missed, devotees can perform it during Abhijit Muhurat.
  • Avoid performing it during Chitra Nakshatra and Vaidhriti Yoga, although they are not strictly prohibited.
  • Performing Ghatasthapana in a Dvi-Svabhava Lagna (like Kanya) is considered highly auspicious.
Puja Vidhi for Ghatasthapana
  • Fill a pot with water, place mango leaves at the mouth and cover it with a coconut wrapped in red cloth.
  • Draw Swastik or Om on the Kalash with turmeric or sindoor.
  • Keep it on a bed of soil filled with barley or wheat seeds, which are allowed to sprout during Navratri as a symbol of growth.
  • Chant mantras and invite Maa Shakti into your home.
  • Light a diya and begin your Navratri fasting and prayers.
Why Ghatasthapana is Important?

Ghatasthapana sets the spiritual foundation for Shardiya Navratri. It is believed that by performing this ritual, devotees invite Goddess Durga’s energy into their homes, which protects them from negativity and blesses them with health, happiness, and prosperity.

As per scriptures, the Kalash represents creation, fertility, and abundance. Worshipping it during Navratri is equal to worshipping the Goddess herself.

The ritual of Ghatasthapana 2025 on September 22 marks the beginning of Shardiya Navratri celebrations. Devotees should follow the correct muhurat and puja vidhi to ensure maximum blessings of Goddess Durga. By observing this tradition with devotion, one not only seeks divine protection but also reconnects with ancient spiritual practices that have been followed for centuries.
