Pitru Paksha 2025: On Which Tithi Should Shraddha Be Performed?

Pitru Paksha 2025 Shraddha Tithi is one of the most important aspects of this fortnight of honoring ancestors. During this sacred period, Shraddha rituals are performed according to the tithi (lunar date) of the death anniversary of the departed soul. These rituals are believed to bring peace to ancestors and blessings of prosperity, health and harmony to the family.

Pitru Paksha Shraddha: Importance of Tithi

The tithi holds deep significance in deciding when Shraddha should be performed. According to scriptures, performing rituals on the correct date ensures that offerings reach the ancestors directly, maintaining the sacred bond between generations.

When Death Date is Unknown

If the exact death date of an ancestor is not known, the Shraddha can be performed on Amavasya (New Moon Day) of Pitru Paksha, which is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. This day is considered the most powerful for honoring all ancestors collectively.

Shraddha for Married Women

For women who passed away while being married, Shraddha should be performed on Navami Tithi. Even if the exact date of death is not remembered, Navami is reserved for honoring them with devotion and respect.

Shraddha for Saints and Monks

All Vaishnav saints and monks are remembered on Ekadashi Tithi. This day is especially dedicated to spiritual masters and guides, who renounced worldly life.

Shraddha on Chaturdashi Tithi

The Chaturdashi Shraddha is observed for those who met unnatural or tragic ends, such as through weapons, suicide, poison, accidents, or violent circumstances. Performing Shraddha on this tithi is believed to bring peace to such departed souls.

Special Cases of Death

Ancestors who passed away due to snake bites, curses from Brahmins, lightning, fire burns, animal attacks, pandemics like COVID-19, tuberculosis, cholera, or other epidemics, or even at the hands of bandits or dacoits, are honored with Shraddha on both Chaturdashi and Amavasya during Pitru Paksha.

Pitru Paksha 2025 offers families the opportunity to remember and honor their ancestors through Shraddha performed on the correct tithi. Observing these rituals with devotion not only grants peace to departed souls but also ensures prosperity and well-being for future generations.
