Haridwar, Uttarakhand: Thousands of devotees thronged Haridwar in the early hours of Wednesday, July 23, to take a sacred dip in the Holy Ganga on the auspicious occasion of Shravan Shivratri 2025 and the concluding day of the Kanwar Yatra. The holy bath, considered highly meritorious, drew saffron-clad Kanwariyas and Shiva devotees from across North India, seeking blessings of Lord Shiva during the holy month of Sawan.
Kanwar Camps Set Up for Pilgrims
Authorities have arranged multiple Kanwar camps along the yatra route to support devotees returning from Haridwar. Anuj Chaudhary, Chandausi Circle Officer (Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh), stated that the camps are equipped with food, drinking water, medical care, and rest facilities for pilgrims.
“Medical teams and refreshment facilities have been deployed round the clock. Separate arrangements have also been made near temples with CCTV surveillance and route diversions for crowd control,” Chaudhary said.
Security Measures Across the Region
Bulandshahr and other key districts in Uttar Pradesh have implemented multi-layered security arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe passage for the Kanwariyas. Additional police forces, route diversions, and crowd monitoring are in place to manage the massive footfall.
Grand Celebrations Across Uttar Pradesh
Alongside Haridwar, the spiritual fervor of Sawan Shivratri was visible across Uttar Pradesh, as thousands of devotees gathered at Shiva temples. In Varanasi, special rituals were conducted at the renowned Kailash Math Shiva Temple, while the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple saw long queues of barefoot Kanwariyas waiting patiently to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek with sacred Ganga water.
Significance of Ganga Snan on Shravan Shivratri
A holy dip in the Ganga during Shravan Shivratri is believed to cleanse sins, remove obstacles, and bring divine blessings. Devotees perform Jalabhishek on Shivlingas at nearby temples after collecting the sacred water, fulfilling their Kanwar Yatra vows.
This year, Haridwar witnessed one of the largest gatherings for Shravan Shivratri 2025, as devotees from states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan traveled to the holy city, many walking barefoot for several days to express devotion to Lord Shiva.
