Maha Bharani Shraddha 2025 will be observed on Thursday, September 11, 2025, during the holy period of Pitru Paksha. This Shraddha is performed when Bharani Nakshatra prevails during Aparahna Kaal. As Bharani Nakshatra is ruled by Yama, the God of Death, this Shraddha holds immense spiritual importance for honoring ancestors and seeking their blessings.

Bharani Shraddha is also known as Maha Bharani Shraddha, Chauth Bharani, or Bharani Panchami, depending on whether Bharani Nakshatra falls on Chaturthi Tithi or Panchami Tithi. In rare cases, it may even occur on Tritiya Tithi. Unlike other Shraddhas, Bharani Shraddha is not linked to a specific Tithi but to the presence of Bharani Nakshatra.

The scriptures highlight that the benefits of performing Bharani Shraddha are considered equal to those of performing Gaya Shraddha, one of the most sacred ancestral rites.

• The day begins with a holy bath and wearing of clean clothes.
• Food offerings (pind daan and specially prepared dishes) are made for the ancestors.
• The rituals are performed under the guidance of a priest during the auspicious Muhurat.
• Tarpan (offering water to ancestors) is performed at the end.
• Feeding Brahmins, cows, or needy people is considered highly meritorious.

According to Dharmasindhu, Bharani Nakshatra Shraddha can be performed not just once after a person’s death but also every year during Pitru Paksha for blessings and removal of Pitru Dosha.
