In many households, the Kedara Vratham is observed for 21 continuous days, beginning on October 1 and concluding on Deepavali Amavasya, October 21, 2025. However, many devotees observe it as a single day fast on the final day of Diwali Amavasya, dedicating their prayers to Lord Shiva.

Kedara Vratham Importance

Kedara Vratham is one of the most sacred fasts for Shiva devotees, observed to attain divine union, peace, and strength. The vrat symbolizes the spiritual balance of Shiva and Shakti, representing the oneness of masculine and feminine energies. Observing this vrat is believed to remove obstacles, bring stability in personal life, and ensure the blessings of both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

This fast is particularly important for married women, who pray for marital harmony, and for those seeking spiritual elevation and divine wisdom.

Legend of Kedara Gauri Vrat

The story of Kedara Gauri Vrat is closely associated with Sage Bhringi and the divine concept of Ardhanarishvara. Sage Bhringi was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva but showed no reverence to Goddess Shakti. This one-sided devotion angered Goddess Parvati, who withdrew her energy from Sage Bhringi’s body, leaving him weak and lifeless.

The separated energy, which was Goddess Gauri herself, realized her wish to be one with Lord Shiva. She performed severe austerities and observed the Kedara Vratham to please Him. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva granted her the left half of His body, uniting them into a single divine form — Ardhanarishvara (अर्धनारीश्वर), symbolizing the inseparable nature of Shiva and Shakti.

Since Goddess Gauri herself observed this sacred vrat, it came to be known as Kedara Gauri Vrat, meaning “the vow observed by Gauri for Kedara (Shiva).”

Devotees observing the Kedara Vratham maintain purity, discipline, and devotion throughout the period. Key rituals include:
