Kalparambha and Akal Bodhon: Significance

Kalparambha is deeply symbolic as it sets the stage for Durga Puja in Bengal, just as Ghatasthapana or Kalashsthapana begins Navratri in other regions of India. It is also known as Akal Bodhon, meaning the “untimely invocation” of Goddess Durga. Traditionally, Devi was worshipped during Chaitra Navratri, but over time, Sharad Navratri and Durga Puja became the main festivals of Durga worship.

According to sacred texts, it was Lord Rama who first performed Akal Bodhon of Goddess Durga before his battle with Ravana. He sought the blessings of the Divine Mother for strength and victory, and this tradition laid the foundation for Durga Puja during Sharad Navratri.

Rituals of Kalparambha Puja

During Kalparambha rituals, Goddess Durga is invoked to reside in either a Bilva tree or a Kalash. This sacred act is called Amantran (invitation) and Adhivas (sanctification). The rituals are considered equivalent to Bilva Nimantran observed in other states. Devotees believe that this invocation brings Goddess Durga’s divine presence into the puja pandal, marking the official commencement of festivities.

Kalparambha in Durga Puja Traditions

While Durga Puja in Bengal is popularly celebrated for five days (Shashthi to Dashami), Kalparambha reminds us of its deeper spiritual roots. Just as Navratri can be celebrated for 9, 7, 5, 3, 2, or even 1 day, Kalparambha symbolizes flexibility in devotion while keeping the essence of Durga worship alive.
