The Nishita Puja, the midnight ritual that is considered the most sacred during Krishna Janmashtami, will be performed from 12:01 AM to 12:45 AM on August 27, allowing devotees to immerse themselves in prayers and devotional songs to honor the birth of the beloved deity. This sacred time window, known as Nishita Kala, holds special importance as Lord Krishna is believed to have been born during this period.

In many parts of India, the Dahi Handi festivities, symbolizing Lord Krishna’s playful nature and love for butter, will take place the following day on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Groups of enthusiastic participants, known as Govindas, will form human pyramids to break a pot of curd, recreating Krishna’s mischievous stealing of butter in his childhood.

For those observing the Parana (breaking of the fast), the timings vary according to different traditions and practices. As per Dharma Shastra, Parana can be done after 03:38 PM on August 27, marking the end of the Rohini Nakshatra. Alternatively, the fast can also be broken as early as 05:57 AM on the same day after sunrise. In modern tradition, however, many devotees prefer to break their fast immediately after the Nishita Puja, around 12:45 AM, to coincide with the midnight moment of Lord Krishna’s birth.

The celestial events associated with Janmashtami include the Ashtami Tithi, which begins at 03:39 AM on August 26 and ends at 02:19 AM on August 27, 2024. Additionally, the Rohini Nakshatra, a significant astrological event linked to Lord Krishna’s birth, will commence at 03:55 PM on August 26 and end at 03:38 PM on August 27, 2024.

Janmashtami is not just a festival but a spiritual occasion, reminding devotees of Lord Krishna’s teachings and his role as a guide for humanity, encouraging a life of righteousness and devotion.
