What Is Akhuratha Sankashti Chaturthi?

According to the Amanta Hindu Panchang, this vrat falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Margashirsha month (Purnimanta Pausha). On this day, devotees worship Akhuratha Ganesha, the divine form where the mouse acts as the charioteer. Here, “Akhu” means mouse and “Ratha” means chariot, symbolising humility, wisdom, and protection.

This special form of Lord Ganesha is believed to bless devotees with good fortune, clarity, and success in difficult tasks.

Akhuratha Sankashti Puja Rituals

  1. Devotees begin the fast by taking a bath, cleaning the puja space, and placing an idol or image of Akhuratha Ganesha.
  2. Fresh flowers, durva grass, incense, and Naivedya like modak or fruits are offered. Devotees chant Ganesha mantras and read the Akhuratha Sankashti Vrat Katha.
  3. The fast is broken only after moonrise. Once the moon appears at 7:55 PM, devotees perform Chandra Darshan, offer water (arghya) to the moon, and complete the vrat.

Yudhishthira’s Relief in Dwapara Yuga

During Dwapara Yuga, when Dharmaraja Yudhishthira faced the loss of his kingdom, Lord Krishna advised him to observe this vrat. With its blessings, Yudhishthira regained his kingdom and stability. These stories highlight the vrat’s power to remove difficulties and bring divine support in times of crisis.

Significance of Akhuratha Sankashti

Akhuratha Sankashti is believed to remove obstacles, bring fortune, and bless devotees with clarity and strength. Worshipping Akhuratha Ganesha on this Margashirsha Chaturthi brings peace, progress, and divine protection.
