A travel vlogger from Singapore recently shared an unsettling experience during her trip to Delhi, highlighting challenges that international tourists may face when navigating the city. Posting under the handle @travelswithsyl on Instagram, she recounted specific incidents that have sparked concern among her followers and the broader travel community.
The vlogger shared three key warnings in her post, based on her negative encounters in the Indian capital. The first piece of advice was to avoid taking taxis late at night. She described how she and her companion, unable to secure an Uber from the airport, resorted to using a pre-paid taxi service. Despite the pre-set fare, the driver demanded an additional Rs 200 at the end of the journey and left them at an unfamiliar location, adding unnecessary stress to their arrival.
Her second warning was about sharing personal contact information with local transport operators, particularly rickshaw drivers. The vlogger recounted an instance at Jama Masjid, where she spent a significant amount of time with a rickshaw driver who initially appeared helpful. Expecting to pay around Rs 1,000, which is double the fare of an Uber, she was shocked when the driver insisted on a hefty sum of Rs 6,000, far exceeding her expectations.
Finally, she advised tourists to always carry cash, as it is the preferred method of payment in many areas of India. She explained how relying on credit cards can be problematic, especially when dealing with street vendors and smaller businesses, where cash transactions are more common.
Since being posted, the video has garnered over two million views, with many social media users expressing concerns in the comments. "Always use Uber for transport. Anything else can be unsafe," a user wrote while another user noted, "This is something tourists experience frequently."
"I feel so bad watching this. Wish I was there to guide them," a user commented. Another user remarked sarcastically, "Things to do in Delhi: Leave."
