Standup comic Samay Raina’s new tour is reporting full houses and steady demand—mirroring his pre-India's Got Latent controversy metrics.
Shows of his tour titled Still Alive and Unfiltered are priced at Rs 2,999 and the November 18 show in Bengaluru is sold out and the upcoming one in Mumbai scheduled for November 23 is filling fast.
"Samay Raina’s Still Alive and Unfiltered India tour is priced on par with his pre-controversy shows. But it is the demand that tells a bigger story — over 40,000 tickets sold within hours. The tour’s gross could easily hit Rs 6–10 crore, reaffirming Raina’s status as one of India’s most bankable stand-ups,” said Nisshanth Kini who manages shows of comedians and Founder of Neuwork Solutions, an event and branding company.
Standup comic Yash Bhatia who mostly performs in Delhi said they are happy for Raina's strong comeback. "He brought back the concept shows. Ashish Solanki had started it with Pretty Good Roast. India's Got Latent also clicked with the audiences and even brands."
He however, pointed to the nervousness in the standup scene after the backlash some of the panelists of the show faced including Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, among others.
"After the show was taken off air everyone in the industry was uncertain. There were plans to bring more such shows. When the India's Got Latent controversy was in the spotlight, I was performing on a weekday and when we would be selling 10-15 tickets, we sold only 7-8 tickets. I could sense the worry around me."
Kini noted that Raina’s stage return underscores the commercial resilience of India’s live comedy market.
"Selling tens of thousands of tickets within hours, despite recent controversies, highlights both the depth of his loyal audience and the maturity of the stand-up ecosystem. With Still Alive and Unfiltered, Raina reclaims his position among the country’s top live acts, maintaining ticket pricing and turnout comparable to pre-controversy levels,” he said.
Bhatia pointed to controversies resulting in more opportunities for comics.
"The public response is strong because they supported him even during the controversy. Also, when it comes to comics and controversy such setbacks usually work in their favour. For instance, Munawar Faruqui who saw his ticket sales doubling down after the 2021 controversy. In addition, the public expects comics to talk about the controversy and in Raina's case he did, his new solo is about what happened after the India's Got Latent controversy," he added.
Raina during his show in Delhi also hinted at the second season of India's Got Latent saying "show toh main launga (I will bring back the show)." This time with care and caution as Raina said no phones will be the policy.
His ongoing tour too is a phone-free experience. "Mobile phones, smartwatches, cameras and any recording devices are not allowed in the performance area" this is the message that will reflect when anyone books a ticket for Raina's show using BookMyShow.
Bhatia said that the fear of venues getting vandalised was and is always there. He added that not allowing phones in the performance area is a common practice. "When a show is performed not everything is included in the recording of the show and even phones not being allowed inside auditoriums is a common practice. For instance, for one of Vir Das' shows which was supposed to go on Netflix, there was strict scrutiny in terms of recording of the show by the audience."
