Bengaluru’s rental market has been raising eyebrows lately, with tenants often stunned by how much landlords are charging. Many residents are sharing their experiences online, highlighting just how high rents have climbed in the city.
In one recent case that has caught attention, a woman named Anu said she was asked to pay Rs 80,000 per month for a flat “just because it gets sunlight.”
She described her reaction when told the rent was based on sunlight, “Bangalore rent would never stop surprising me. What do you mean ‘ma’am is room me sunlight bhi aati hai to iska rent Rs 80,000 hai’ (Ma’am, this room also gets sunlight, so its rent is Rs 80,000) ”
Other users on social media also expressed their frustration about rising rents. One said, “Its same across major cities. They find new innovative ways to increase the rent.”
Some people suggested alternative ways to manage such high rent payments, “Rs 80k rent mai dene se acha EMI mai de dun. (Instead of Rs 80k rent, I would rather pay the same as an EMI)”
Others responded with sarcasm, pointing out the absurdity of charging extra for basic features. One said, “You thought sunrise was free?” Another added, “Some folks would tell you this has a balcony, so rent is 1 lakh.”
Anu explained her reason for choosing the location despite the high rent, “My office is nearby, so I’ll take a place there only right.”

Some users warned her about following trends where a few tenants paying high rents influence landlords, “Madam...pls do not take such houses. A few idiots are paying such rents. So it is making a few owners continue that loot practice. These owners have become desperate and want u to pay their EMI +Extra.”
When asked about the location, she confirmed it was HSR Layout, one of Bengaluru’s premium residential areas known for its connectivity and planned streets. Rents in Bengaluru have been rising steadily, particularly in sought-after neighbourhoods.
