If you happen to be in Chennai and get to hop on a certain auto driver’s vehicle, make sure to have cash because he doesn’t accept UPI and he won’t stop at an ATM. A visual artist, who booked a ride through an app, was made aware of this rule as she entered the auto on Tuesday to read a framed message displayed inside prominently – “Gpay not available. No stop for ATM withdrawal”.
The user shared a photo of the message with the tweet: “It was nice knowing y’all” which went viral after being posted on X.
The woman, in comments, detailed that the auto driver did not tell her that there was no UPI payment option when she spoke to him before the ride arrived. With UPI payment available across the country, carrying cash has taken a backseat for most people who prefer hassle-free online payments.
Especially for cabs and autos booked on ride-share apps, UPI payment has become the norm in big cities.

One X user in comments also mentioned that he happened to take the same auto a week ago and claimed the driver was “very angry”. The user responded sharing that the driver was rude to her “for no reason” as well.
One user shared why he believes many auto drivers don’t use UPI still.
“Rickshawala and many people don’t use Gpay or any online service because they don’t want to pay any tax and just want real money in their hand, and I think it actually is the right thing to do,” they wrote.
Many were invested in the story to find out how the woman finally paid the fare and wanted a “Part 2”
The woman said that she borrowed money from the building watchman at her destination to pay the fare as she did not have cash on her.
The viral tweet has been viewed over 1.95 lakh times and has nearly 7,000 likes.
