The NCS confirmed the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.4, adding that no significant damage or casualties had been reported.

Tremors from a 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook Delhi and surrounding areas on Thursday morning, prompting widespread concern and a flurry of reactions on social media. The quake, which struck at approximately 9:04 am, had its epicentre in Jhajjar, Haryana—about 60 kilometres from the national capital—according to data released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The tremors were felt across the Delhi-NCR region, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Several residents reported feeling their homes sway and objects rattle, with many sharing visuals on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to document the moment.

One viral post featured a video of a ceiling fan swinging visibly. A man, speaking off camera, could be heard saying, “The fan is swinging... the whole house rocked a moment ago.” Another post showed a photo of a slightly open wardrobe, with the caption: “#Earthquake so hard opened my wardrobe door.”

An eyewitness in Delhi spoke to news agency ANI, recounting the moment the quake struck: “I felt the tremors... It was a little scary. We should be mindful of safety when this happens.”

Despite the serious nature of the seismic event, social media soon saw a wave of humorous takes, as is often the case with trending news in the capital. Many users took to X to share memes and observations, some light-hearted and others laced with sarcasm.

“People are rushing to Twitter to confirm about the earthquake in Delhi,” one user posted, capturing the now-common digital reflex to verify real-world events through social platforms.

Another user commented, “The capital of India should be shifted from New Delhi,” while a third wrote, “It was like some horror movie demon shaking the bed.”

A particularly popular post read: “Polished off 3 aloo parathas like a true warrior. Sat on my bed, belly full, questioning my gluttonous act. Suddenly, an earthquake hit. Either Mother Earth disapproved… or my calorie count finally registered on the Richter scale.”
