Billionaire Miriam Adelson recently made headlines after she reportedly bought a majority stake in US basketball team Dallas Mavericks from fellow billionaire investor investor Mark Cuban.

Here are 10 things to know about the 78-year-old American-Israeli physician, philanthropist, and political donor.

1.) Miriam Adelson and her family are the largest shareholders of the Las Vegas Sands in the US. Headquartered in Nevada, the company owns a number of casinos and resorts in two of the world’s premier gambling hubs: the Las Vegas Strip and in Macau. As per Forbes, Las Vegas Sands also owns the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and is planning to construct a new development on Long Island, New York.

2.) She sold $2 billion worth of Las Vegas Sands stock (about 1 percent of her stake) to buy a professional sports team, the company said in a statement.

3.) Adelson is listed as the fifth-richest woman in the world by Forbes, and her family's wealth is estimated to be worth $32.3 billion.

4.) She and her family inherited 56 percent of the shares of the world’s largest casino company when her spouse, Las Vegas Sands founder Sheldon Adelson, died in 2021.

5.) As a doctor, Miriam Adelson is also popular for her focus on addiction.

6.) Born in Israel, she has made significant donations toward improving Jewish relations in the US.

7.) She has been a vocal critic of people protesting Israel’s military response to Hamas’ terrorist attacks of October 7.

8.) Miriam Adelson is a also generous contributor to the Republican Party. She and her late husband donated over $218 million to conservative candidates and causes during the 2020 US elections, Forbes stated.

9.) They also supported Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. The former US President also honoured Miriam Adelson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, on November 16, 2018, in Washington, DC. 10.) Adelson reportedly met the US presidential candidate from the Republican Party Nikki Haley in Las Vegas, as well as former President Donald Trump recently.
