Apple CEO Tim Cook recently revealed why the tech giant releases new iPhones every year. Speaking to Brut after the release of its newest offering iPhone 15, Cook said it's a great thing for people who want it.
"I think having an iPhone every year for those people that want it is a great thing," he told the publication. Cook also advocated for the company's practice of allowing Apple users to get a better deal for a new iPhone if they trade in their old ones, suggesting that the older versions find use among a different set of users. "We then resell those phones if they are still functional. If an iPhone is not functional, we have methods to disassemble it and recycle the materials to create a new iPhone," Tim Cook added.
His comments come at a time when concerns regarding the environmental impact of releasing a new iPhone every year have been growing, but as per the CEO, Apple is committed to maximising the value of older iPhones.
He also highlighted the company's commitment to becoming completely carbon-neutral by 2030.
Interestingly, Apple's focus on sustainability was evident when it opened its first retail store in India. The recently-opened store at Mumbai's BKC is one of its most sustainable and energy-efficient ones yet, the company claimed.
It has a dedicated solar array and zero reliance on fossil fuels for store operations. The store is operationally carbon neutral, running on 100 percent renewable energy, Apple had said ahead of the store's inauguration in April.
