A Bengaluru man won Rs 1 lakh compensation from an Apple India service centre after they had allegedly caused damage to his iPhone 13 device, a Times of India report said.
30-year-old Awez Khan, a resident of Frazer Town, brought an iPhone 13 in October 2021 with a year long warranty. A few months later, he encountered issues with the battery and the speaker. In August 2022, he went to the service centre in Indiranagar, located in the eastern part of the city, seeking help.
He was told that the issue was fixable and he would get his phone back in one week's time. A few days later, the man got a call saying the issue had been fixed and he could come and take his iPhone.
The man went to the service centre to collect the device but found out that the iPhone was still not functioning normally. The service centre said they would have a look at the device again, but did not respond back to Khan for two weeks.
Later, he was informed by the iPhone representatives that a glue-like substance had been found on the device's outer mesh and fixing the issue would not fall under the one-year warranty. The man sent a few emails to Apple's representatives but did not get a response.
In October 2022, the man sent a legal notice which also did not fetch him a reply. In December, the man filed a complaint with the local district consumer disputes redressal commission.
A city consumer court later heard his pleas and recently ordered Apple to pay him a compensation of Rs 79,900 with interest and an extra Rs 20,000 for the hardships caused to him.
