According to news reports pouring in from various news agencies, singer-actress Vijay Lakshmi alias Mallika Rajput was found dead in her house in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh under suspicious circumstances on Tuesday, police said. The body of the 37-year-old singer was reportedly found hanging from the fan in a room of her house in Sitakund locality of Kotwali police station area, they said.
Her mother Sumitra Singh has informed the police that the family was sleeping and did not know anything about the incident. Although postmortem reports are yet to confirm the cause of death, according to Kotwali police station in-charge Shriram Pandey, prima facie it seems to be a case of suicide.
Rajput, a resident of Sultanpur in UP is best known for her supporting role in the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Revolver Rani (2014). Reportedly, she was also part of a 2015 music video Yaara Tujhe by popular singer Shaan. Her Instagram account, which has a little more than 3,000 followers, describes her as an author with hashtags of ghazal writer, song writer and script writer. In her last post, which was five days ago, she asked her fans to subscribe to her YouTube channel. On January 1, 2023, she had posted an image of herself with the caption ‘Instead of resolutions, let’s weave intentions’, asking her fans to ‘be the bold authors of your own story’.
According to a report by Republic World, she had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2016 but left it after two years. She also wrote books, one was on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Namo Shasak. In 2022, she was appointed the National Secretary General of the Bharatiya Savarna Sangh in UP. The multifaceted Rajput was not just a trained Kathak dancer but a ghazal writer as well. Some of the posts on her Instagram account mention some of the poems written by her. She has also performed ghazals at public events.
