Davos 2024: Recognize's Francisco D'Souza on the future of IT hiring in India: 'Still a great creator of jobs'. Watch

Francisco D'Souza further said that despite artificial intelligence (AI) playing a role in driving productivity in future, there was reason to feel optimistic about building a career in the IT sector.

Since the start of the 21st century, the Information Technology (IT) sector in India has grown exponentially, with leading software giants establishing offices in some of the country's leading cities.

That has seen a rise in hiring of final-year students from engineering colleges, thereby causing a surge in the need among students and parents to enroll into computer science and computer science-related courses at leading institutes.

But with introduction of initiatives such as Make-in-India, sectors such as manufacturing have also witnessed growth in the past decade. But despite the growth in those sectors, Recognize co-founder & managing partner and former Cognizant CEO Francisco D’Souza felt that the IT industry would continue to hire in future due to increased implementation of technology.

"I think so. I think, perhaps, we are going through a period of some volatility, at the moment. But at the end of the day you have to look at the macro picture, the big picture. The big picture is that 10 years from now, there is no question in my mind that the world is going to be far more technology intensive, far more technology embedded in everything around us than it is today," he told Moneycontrol in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"In order to do that, as much as AI is going to drive productivity and so on and so forth there is going to be a certain amount of that that needs to be driven by smart technologists and that is going to drive employment and labour and so on and so forth. So I think over the long term, it is still a great creator of jobs, a great place to be and great place for people to build their careers, " he added.

Earlier, Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji had adviced engineers to focus on skilling and reskilling and not look at technology as a threat, but as an enhancer.
