Even as the deadlock over BS Yeddyurappa's successor continued in Karnataka, Congress today alleged that moves were afoot in the BJP to dump the report of the Lokayukta on illegal mining to placate the outgoing Chief Minister.

Citing regional media reports, party spokesperson Manish Tewari alleged that Yeddyurappa's resignation was secured by BJP's central leaders on an assurance that Lokayukta Santosh Hegde's report on illegal mining indicting him will be rejected by the state government.

"BJP should explain on what conditions was Yeddyurappa's resignation secured. There are reports that the Chief Minister's resignation was taken by the central leaders of BJP on the condition that the Lokayukta's report will be dumped. The state government in fact has the power to reject Lokyukta's report," Tewari said.

The Congress spokesperson also urged the Supreme Court to look into the issue. "We also want to appeal to the Supreme Court. Since they are monitoring the issue of illegal mining, these reports coming in vernacular media should be considered with all seriousness," he said.

While maintaining that he respects Hegde personally and was only seeking clarifications, Tewari asked whether the Karnataka Lokayukta used his powers to give a declaration against Yeddyurappa in his report or take suo motu action against him after finding him guilty of corruption.
