ChatGPT maker Open AI has been attracting talents from rival tech giants such as Meta and Google but the company recently intensified its efforts by offering salaries as high as Rs 83 crore per annum, The Information reported. By dangling these carrots, Open AI is hoping to poach Google's best researchers and top tech resources for their artificial intelligence chatbot.

Last year, five former Google researchers were listed in the acknowledgments section of OpenAI's blog post announcing the launch of ChatGPT. The Sam Altman-headed AI company has already hired at least 93 people who have previously worked at Google and Meta, The Information reported. The publication cited data from LeadGenius and Punks & Pinstripes to add that Open AI had around 59 former Google employees and about 34 ex-Meta staff working for it as of February.

Job listings for research engineers with OpenAI showed an annual salary range of between $245,000 and $450,000 ( about Rs 2 crore and Rs 3.8 crore) along with a "generous equity" and other benefits which add up to Rs 83 crore a year.

Speaking at a podcast, Jan Leike, OpenAI's head of super alignment -- a team focused on making its AI systems align with human interests -- had said in August that the team is hiring research engineers, scientists, and managers, Business Insider reported.

He added that the company is looking for strong candidates who are passionate about making AI safer, who understand machine learning, can think critically, and know how to code.

During his visit to India earlier this year, Sam Altman seemed eager to welcome bright young IT practitioners from the country into the OpenAI workspace. “Many of our best researchers are undergraduates or are college dropouts. You certainly do not need a PhD to do great work. OpenAI will welcome you on the basis of talent, and we are certainly a good fit for undergrads,” Business Standard reported the OpenAI CEO as saying.

Echoing Altman's remarks, Atty Eleti, a software engineer at OpenAI, said that those interested in working with the company can simply send an email to the CEO. “If you guys amaze us using the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), building some amazing products, contribute to open-source resources, and then just email sam@openai.com, you will get a job,” Eleti said.
