Karnataka Milk Federation’s (KMF) flagship brand Nandini is set to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI)-based product counting solution across select dairy units to automate the tracking of milk and milk product crates.
The AI-based system will be implemented at Bengaluru Dairy, Kanakapura Dairy and Hosakote Dairy, which together handle a significant share of milk packing and dispatch operations under Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (BAMUL).

BAMUL, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in South India, is responsible for the procurement, processing, packing and distribution of milk and milk products, catering to a wide consumer base while supporting thousands of dairy farmers across the region.
According to officials, BAMUL operates multiple modern milk packing facilities, including major packing stations at Kanakapura and Hoskote, where large volumes of milk, curd and other dairy products are packed and dispatched daily. “Given the scale of operations, accurate tracking of milk crates and product crates during packing, loading, unloading and dispatch is critical for operational efficiency, inventory control and loss prevention” an official said.
“To enhance transparency, accuracy and automation in crate management, BAMUL has proposed the deployment of an AI camera-based crate counting system,” he said.
The system is expected to automatically detect, count and record milk and milk product crates in real time, reduce manual intervention and human error, while providing reliable data for reconciliation and audits.

BAMUL has recently floated a tender inviting experienced agencies for the design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of AI-based camera solution at BAMUL’s main dairy and the National Milk Packing Centre (NMPC) at Kanakapura.
The proposed solution will use high-resolution IP cameras and AI-powered computer vision models to identify packaged milk, curd and other dairy products across different stock keeping units (SKUs). The system will also integrate photoelectric sensors on packing machines and leverage deep learning models for object detection, tracking and colour classification.
“Once implemented, AI-based counting solution is expected to improve accuracy in crate reconciliation, strengthen audit processes, and provide real-time visibility into packing and dispatch operations. This will be another step in our broader push towards digitalisation and automation across the dairy value chain”, he adds.
