Although speculative all this while, some substantiating evidence indicating that the next iPhone would be a world phone has now surfaced. The next generation of the iPhone from Apple is said to have dual-mode capability allowing it to use both CDMA, as well as GSM SIM cards. According to a report by tech website TechCrunch, a developer who makes popular apps for iOS has offered proof that the next smartphone from Apple would have this feature.

iPhone 5 to launch this September?

On condition of anonymity, the developer has stated that he was able to retrieve information from logs, which indicate a new device supporting both CDMA and GSM SIMs. The report states, “The logs show that the app has been briefly tested by a handful of people using what is almost certainly an iPhone 5, evidently running iOS 5, sporting two distinct sets of mobile network codes (MNC) / mobile country codes (MCC). Those codes can be used to uniquely identify mobile carriers.” These carriers are said to be AT&T as well as Verizon. This would be a boon to travelers as one could easily switch SIM cards across both networks while visiting different countries. This would boost sales of the iPhone across the globe making it a true ‘world’ phone. The next iPhone is rumoured to launch alongside iOS 5 and the speculated release date is said to be sometime in October. As for now, we have to wait and see if these indications hold true.
